Are large supermarkets putting customer convenience at risk by replacing express checkouts with self-serve, leaving those with only a few items stuck in long lines. Where has customer service gone?

Supermarkets in my locale used to have my favoured manned 'express checkouts' where I can whizz through and pay for only so many items, but sadly these have been replaced by self checkouts. I much prefer to go through a regular express checkout and interact with people not a machine.
I'd enjoy to see supermarkets keep more traditional checkout lanes open, especially re-introduce my preferred '12 items or less' express checkouts.
I find that self-serve checkouts, particularly when replacing express lanes, negatively impact my convenience especially myself with only a few items. Self-checkouts may be quicker for small purchases for some, but they can be frustrating when they go wrong, potentially leading to longer wait times or even theft.
I recently read somewhere that some supermarkets are even removing self-checkout lanes due to these issues and shoplifting concerns.Easy. If I’m doing the checkout work, pay me for my effort.
