Do you want to go off road or do you just want more then 5 seats?
If a 4x4 any of the reputable models from any of the large manufacturers are great. If you just want more seats, get a van. If you just want to be taller then the rest of traffic, dont

Audi Q5 and Land Rover discovery sport are among the best SUV cars. Land Rover has better 4x4 capability. Hyundai 4x4 Is among the best SUV cars as well.

I heard recently, that a Hyundai 4x4 was best in class, comparable to a Toyota Rav 4.

There is a lot of variation is size for SUV's along with price point and availability. The Kia Sportage won car of the year and I personally like the CX-30 from Mazda (not the CX-3 as that is a model also). I don't have any recommendations for medium sized and large SUV's unfortunately. There is also the Ford Puma, but I don't know how they compares.
