Tattoos all over many people

One of my acquaintances recently posted on face book that she had just got a tattoo - the photo shows a rather large one covering most of a forearm
The person is around 40 years of age and has reasonably good skin - but I know this does not last - as we age - our skin loses elasticity and the tattoo will start to look not that good, will be something she may want to cover up then.
Even aside from this - I don't see that it does anything to enhance her looks - she looks ok without it.
The comments from others were "looks great" and "wish I was brave enough to get one" and similar.
The trend to get these tattoos all over everyone - is just a fad - that will pass like beehive hairstyles and all the other faddish things in the past.
Then they want them gone, or have to cover them up. The number of young men getting these sleeves all over their arms and torsos - is quite a lot, and the tattoos really don't look very good - many of them are undertaken on a whim and there doesn't seem to be a theme to the pictures - to me they just make their arms look grubby.
I know its their personal choice, but I suppose what they get tattooed onto themselves, a girl may be able to read into their "choices" and avoid them!
Working in health, I have seen many people wanting to get them removed - especially the ones with peoples names on them, and they are not easy to remove - even with lasers - which is rather expensive and there will always be scarring and damaged skin left.
The tattoos themselves are fairly costly - think I would rather spend money on a good holiday or travel, then silly looking tattoos that I know they are going to regret in 10 years time - or less in some cases.

I don't see a question posed to answer here. Are you looking for other people's opinions on tattoos and if they themselves would get them?
If tattoos aren't your thing and you see them as a waste of money, that is great that you understand that about yourself. For others, they see their skin as a canvas, and tattoos along with a hairstyle, piercings, coloured hair, clothes, lifestyle choices are part of their identity and self-expression, which ultimately makes them happier with themselves. Not everyone has high self-confidence to begin with and many younger people suffer from anxiety, fearing they don't fit in.
Of course, tattoos should never be done by a friend, when drunk and on a whim. I don't have tattoos by choice, however, I have friends and relatives who do have tattoos. They have thought long and hard about their tattoos, design, artist, colours and how their sleeve will ultimately look. They have well executed tattoos which reflect their likes, growth and personality. Not one of them has a tattoo regret, tramp stamp, ex-partner name they wish to get either removed or covered up with another tattoo. People need to choose wisely. I readily accept their choice of having tattoos and what they get tattooed as it is their body and their life, and I accept them as they are. So yes, tattoos or not are a personal choice and if someone is willing to pay for art on their body, ranging generally from $250 - $1000 per tattoo that is fine. People can become obsessed with having different parts of their body completed, and tattoos generally. At least it is better than other obsessions.
