I think you can't go past a really proper meat pie. Not a footy, four n twenty style pie, but a thick crusted, chunks of beef in stew, country pie.
Ideally it comes from a bakery in a small town on a road trip which has advertised either the best pie in Victoria/Tasmania/NSW etc., or the best vanilla slice. Extra points if the bakery is tiny with an air con unit wheezing in the background.
Whether it's beef and mushroom, beef and guiness or peppered beef, it should be decent chunks of fall-apart meat, eaten on a bench outside the bakery with some tomato sauce squeezed on top. The gravy drips into the paper bag it was served in, and the pastry flakes somehow end up all over the eater.
The ultimate aussie comfort food isn't just about the pie, it's about the experience of eating it!

Med rare steak sandwich with egg, beetroot , bacon , lettuce , cheese with tomato sauce and hot beer battered chips. Best thing on on a cold day with a beer or watching sport.

I do love a hot, smoking sausage roll on a winter day. They are filling, comforting and delicious. They feel very Aussie to me and make a good alternative to a meat pie as I find them much tastier.

G'day Prad! Whilst I appreciate the classic Aussie options you've mentioned, my comfort food of choice would have to be a proper Highland Beef and Stout Pie—think tender, slow-cooked beef braised in rich stout with root vegetables, all encased in buttery, flaky pastry. There's something deeply satisfying about the way the robust flavours meld together, and the hearty nature of it makes it perfect for those chilly evenings when you need something that truly sticks to your ribs. The combination of the malty depth from the stout and the succulent beef creates a comforting experience that feels like a warm embrace, and paired with a dollop of creamy mash or some crispy chips, it's absolute perfection on a plate.

Its got to be sausage on a slice of bread. That just makes your day and its a nostalgia feeling having to get that when you go to Bunnings on a sunday and see this there. just brings back some positive feelings.

I try not to be addicted of any comfort food, it is u healthy to have too much of it so I prefer a balanced snack, not a comforting one

Comfort food for taking to someone’s house is definitely a cob loaf, so many different ones! For myself it would have to be a meat pie or sausage roll and sauce.

Hot Milo made with milk and a cheese toastie. Perfect Winter fare. Can’t get it out of my head. going to make it now.

We are so fortunate to have the best fruit available all year around. And for me nothing beats an organic watermelon, and yes I even eat it in winter. So hydrating which you still need with heaters on in winter and so refreshing after some exercise or gardening work. Keeps me healthy as well as apples, kiwi fruit, red papaya, bananas, berries, pears, and recently tried persimmons that someone gave me and now I love them squashed together with banana.

My own homemade soups (particularly hearty beef and veg, minestrone, tomato or pumpkin), since having multiple food allergies means I can't eat any of the things you listed and can't get anything premade. Yes, I get that comfort food generally does not involve cooking it oneself, but I don't have a choice - I can't even eat things cooked in peanut or olive oil...

I hope that I don’t have to be limited to the choices you gave us above! I don’t even know what a Vegemite soldier is. 🤨
For me, it has to be my non Australian heritage speaking.
My comfort food is definitely plain yoghurt with either a little bit - less than 0.25 of a teaspoon - of plain salt mixed well into a 250g serving of the yoghurt.
And if my stomach is unsettled and needs comfort - so real comfort food is needed, I’ll replace the salt with a clove of crushed garlic.

It's got to be the meat pie. Chicken parmy is really an Italian American dish and Pavlova is controversial with New Zealanders so it's really only leaves Anzac Biscuits and meat pie, and I think meat pie has the edge as a comfort food.
Thom3268
Hot, buttered toast with a light spread of vegemite. Comfort food that is filling and strangely feels a little healthy.
Meg
Meat pie and sauce with a can of soft drink

A bowl of homenade pumpkin soup is definitely comfort soup on a cold day.

You can't beat an Aussie meat pie, I reckon. When it comes to sweets, I love caramel slice. And I adore mashed potato and gravy.
CatTracey
My fave comfort food in winter? Anything with mashed potatoe. Beef casserole, with lots of vegies on top of buttery mashed potatoe.

Homemade pizza has to be my go to meal for comfort. The whole family loves it.

Nothing typically Aussie, other than Timtams, anything with chocolate, I go to chocolate coated peanuts for a sweet snack. Timtams are like the English Penguin chocolate bars.
rebcarmel
I also reach for the chocolate when I need comfort food
cazter
My ultimate Aussie comfort food would need to be chocolate for the endorphins.

Sooooop! As soon as the Wintery chills set in, my mind turns to hearty soups!! Sudden chilly nights and several cold days recently and you would think a switch was flicked here in Melbourne because Winter announced itself! So soup days are here again!! Made a de-licious Sweet potato with red Thai curry paste and coconut milk this week. Last week was a fabulous minestrone! Serve both with crusty sourdough or Turkish bread - and yummo!!!!
Soups are good! They’re healthy! They hit the spot and they’re comforting somehow!! Funny that in Summer, soup would be the last thing on my mind to make!
bearman
My comfort food is a tin of condensed milk boiled to turn it into caramel. Scoop this into a short-crust pastry flan, add icecream and whipped cream; Yum and blow the calories!
CatTracey
If you add mashed banana to that, it would be a banana caramel treat.

I love Vegemite on raisin bread, try it before you say it, it really is that good.
I also like a good home made (by me) lemon meringue pie, with a puckery lemon curd.

Hi Prad
This is a tough one (and I don't think you'll settle anything), I draw comfort from many foods which wrap me up in heart-warming memories. If my 'back is to the wall' and I have to decide, I'll go with a nice Cottage Pie. :P

On all my leisure roadtrips we always stop at all the town bakeries without fail to enjoy a good pie or a sausage roll with sauce, also the omnipresent iconic vanilla slices, custard tarts, lamingtons, cream buns and jam filled donuts.
We also seek out take-aways that make potato scallops during our roadtrip stopovers.
Rosalyn3270
oh yes these are really good too

I generally look for the Vietnamese bakeries... Banh Mi is ideal.

Choosing the ultimate Aussie comfort food is a tough call, but I'd have to go with the classic meat pie with tomato sauce. There's something incredibly satisfying about the flaky pastry and savory meat filling, especially when topped with a dollop of tangy tomato sauce. It's perfect for any occasion, whether you're at a footy game or just enjoying a casual meal. The combination of flavors and textures makes it a quintessential Aussie dish that hits the spot every time!

G’day legends!
Tough call, but I’ve gotta go with the chicken parmy with chips—can’t beat that crispy schnitty smothered in sauce and cheese. It’s the perfect pub feed after a long day, and when those chips are hot and crunchy? Game over.
Honourable mention to the meat pie at the footy though—pure Aussie nostalgia in every bite! 🇦🇺🍽️
Bella4927
Definitely a cheese & bacon pie with tomato sauce on a cold winters day, nothing warms your belly better.
For dessert a good apple pie with custard.

For me, nothing beats a small bakery meat pie, they are delicious and wholesome.

I love pea and ham soup with crusty rolls for cold winter meals, a chicken snitty with Diane sauce and chips for autumn and spring meals, and I love anything with salad for the hotter months.
