Do you wish Christmas would come and go quickly or do you look forward to it with great enthusiasm? Do you believe Christmas has lost its meaning given all the materialistic connotations associated with it or does it still have a special place in your heart?

I have been liking the Christmas period less and less the older I get. All I see around me is greed and "I want I want I want" all the time. I'm just grateful there are no children in our family - the youngest members are in their 20's now and planning families of their own. My husband and I are childfree and love the fact our cats are happy with new collars, new bowls and a handful of new toys that all come in under $20. Even our parents are asking for more expensive items these days - and we're not bottomless wallets.

Christmas makes me want to say Bah Humbug all the time. Sure it's a time for being together - but what about the other 364 days a year? If our company isn't good enough any other day of the year, what makes them think we'll welcome them with open arms on Christmas Day? If they can't make the effort any other time, we're not going to make the effort for them on one of the few days we get alone together. Christmas has really lost all meaning - and I'm not talking solely about the Christian/religious meaning, but the general meaning of family, being together and enjoying company and spending real time talking about real things. Instead it is all about how much swag a person got under the tree/in their stocking/from Santa/etc. I wish I didn't have to be a part of it at all - but even at Christmas time we still have to eat, so I still have to go shopping in the madness that is the Silly Season. I'm just glad I'm not working retail this year, as in years past!
