Telstra - use it or lose it

Telco's policy of use it or lose it when it comes to the service you pay for and if you do not use it you lose it. This relates to data and pre-paid services. Basically you pay for something, e.g. data top up or pre-paid connection and if you do not use it within the telco's timeframe then you lose what you paid for.

The new policy from Telstra of applying a $10-1GB top up automatically if you use all the allocated data for your plan is fair when you compare to the price you would pay on the old plan, the only issue is the data is lost at the next cycle of your post-paid plan. Worst case scenario is you get the top up 1 day prior to the cycle turn over. If you do not use this data then it disappears the next day but you are still charged the $10.

I think this policy should be illegal. I paid for the data, so it should be mine to use when and how I like. The policy is almost kindred to extortion. Not only that but it is also part of the new terms when you sign up for a post-paid plan, so you have no option to even opt out.

What do other people think of this use it or lose it policy?

My attitude to Telstra is simple, if there is a better value for money service - take it.
On changing from ADSL to NBN, the difference between Telstara and TPG is very marked.
Telstra 24 month Contract, TGP 18 months
Telstra - Back up power optional extra which is charged - TPG Included in free installation
Telstra - $80 per month 400GB, Local and National Calls, TPG Unlimited Downloads, all local & National Calls, 100 mins free International calls per month, and calls to Aust Mobiles (Telstra to include calls to Austr Mobiles and National calls, add $34 a month.
Guess which one I chose after over 15 years with Telstra.
