Why is valentines day so important?

In today's society valentines day is celebrated everywhere. I see girls walking around with roses, chocolates, teddies and often wonder do people esp. the youngsters even know what it stands for and the history behind it or is this just an excuse for companies to make more money?
I often get the disappointed look from family/friends upon telling them my husband and I don't celebrate valentines day.
Why is there so much pressure? Do you feel it too?
Shouldn't we love and care for each other every day of the year? What is so special about that particular day?

i see your point but i suppose in my opinion i don't celebrate it either only because one i don't have anyone to share it with and two like you have said we should share our love everyday but for those who truly believe in valentines day i suppose it gives them a little extra bit of love and hope in their lives.
me personally I'm not one for sharing how i feel to the people i love around me so its always birthdays and Christmas's i share how much i love the people around me, so in some sense that's what people do when they celebrate valentines day sharing their love for the whole day just to show people that they care about them and that they cant live without them.
