Why is valentines day so important?

In today's society valentines day is celebrated everywhere. I see girls walking around with roses, chocolates, teddies and often wonder do people esp. the youngsters even know what it stands for and the history behind it or is this just an excuse for companies to make more money?

I often get the disappointed look from family/friends upon telling them my husband and I don't celebrate valentines day.

Why is there so much pressure? Do you feel it too?

Shouldn't we love and care for each other every day of the year? What is so special about that particular day?

Hi Jennifer, you and I have been married the same amount of years (46 - but who is counting!) We don't celebrate 14 Feb. but I can tell you my husband has never forgotten my birthday (always get a lovely gift he chooses) and every wedding Anniversary it has been flowers and dinner. He hasn't been well this last couple of years and we haven't been able to dine out, but I still have dinner bought for me and I don't think I have ever cooked on our Anniversary. Aint love grand!
