Why is valentines day so important?

In today's society valentines day is celebrated everywhere. I see girls walking around with roses, chocolates, teddies and often wonder do people esp. the youngsters even know what it stands for and the history behind it or is this just an excuse for companies to make more money?
I often get the disappointed look from family/friends upon telling them my husband and I don't celebrate valentines day.
Why is there so much pressure? Do you feel it too?
Shouldn't we love and care for each other every day of the year? What is so special about that particular day?

Really the reason is to keep Hallmark, florist and chocolate companies from having a bad year. Plus we are human and we at times wish to show how affectionate we are. So we buy overpriced card, red roses, chocolates and silly stuffed toys
