Why is valentines day so important?

In today's society valentines day is celebrated everywhere. I see girls walking around with roses, chocolates, teddies and often wonder do people esp. the youngsters even know what it stands for and the history behind it or is this just an excuse for companies to make more money?
I often get the disappointed look from family/friends upon telling them my husband and I don't celebrate valentines day.
Why is there so much pressure? Do you feel it too?
Shouldn't we love and care for each other every day of the year? What is so special about that particular day?

I do think there is a bit of pressure, but I think it's single people that feel it the most. So many people around this time of year will ask what you're doing for Valentines day, and hand our sympathetic looks when you say 'nothing'.
My partner and I don't really celebrate Valentines Day, but I do think it's nice to have one day of the year to either spend with each other, or do something nice for each other. Just like Fathers Day or Mothers Day!
