Why is valentines day so important?

In today's society valentines day is celebrated everywhere. I see girls walking around with roses, chocolates, teddies and often wonder do people esp. the youngsters even know what it stands for and the history behind it or is this just an excuse for companies to make more money?
I often get the disappointed look from family/friends upon telling them my husband and I don't celebrate valentines day.
Why is there so much pressure? Do you feel it too?
Shouldn't we love and care for each other every day of the year? What is so special about that particular day?

Valentines Day for me is a special day, the day i met my man!
We dont do all the lovey dovey stuff, but an exchange in gifts is usually the go along with dinner and movies, but we do that every now and then anyways.
I think some people go OTT with it and others just treat it lightly!
I think that everyday should be a day where you shower your loved one and it shouldn't be just one day out of the year.
