Why is valentines day so important?

In today's society valentines day is celebrated everywhere. I see girls walking around with roses, chocolates, teddies and often wonder do people esp. the youngsters even know what it stands for and the history behind it or is this just an excuse for companies to make more money?
I often get the disappointed look from family/friends upon telling them my husband and I don't celebrate valentines day.
Why is there so much pressure? Do you feel it too?
Shouldn't we love and care for each other every day of the year? What is so special about that particular day?

i think it is important for people to pause and smell the roses - or literally give the roses. not everyday do we ponder and realize that what we are doing is sharing love and happiness to those surrounding us. there is no pressure , you can always say no if you don't want to. i just wish it's not so commercialized as it is now - the price of flowers and chocolates escalate too much at this time of the year.
