Are hair colour products safe?

I have only had my hair coloured once - for a special occasion to cover the white hair amongst the auburn (the hairdresser said it is white not grey) My hairdresser asked the day I made the booking if I had ever had it done before. When I said no she suggested that she put a little on my arm to see if I had any reaction at all. Fortunately I didn't but I wouldn't have it done again as the fumes from it were so strong I nearly vomitted and felt nauseus for a few hours afterwards. It was too cold and windy to go outside while waiting for it take affect.
