It seems to me that the transition from Primary to High School is a challenging one, made even greater by the fact that the new year 8's are being subjected to speeches about the enormity of the work load, the expectations, the need for immediate time management skills and independence. Could we not just tone it down for the first few weeks, offer encouragement and make sure that the students are settling in??

Where my 2 children went to school (our daughter finished year 12 in 2010 and our son is in Yr 12 this year) the transition is easier because the school is K - 12 and they also have Middle School 7 - 9, so I find this really help the students to feel less stressed as they don't have to leave and start at a new school in Year 8 as we had to when I was at school.
