How do you feel about Christmas? Love it? Hate it?

Do you wish Christmas would come and go quickly or do you look forward to it with great enthusiasm? Do you believe Christmas has lost its meaning given all the materialistic connotations associated with it or does it still have a special place in your heart?

I agree that the original meaning of Christmas appears to have disappeared. In the younger years parents were on much lower wages and subsequently bought or did what they could for the kids, and we even bought presents for our mum, albeit with pocket money our dad had given us, so effectively he paid for all the presents, and we were happy with what we got.

We did not have a TV therefore were not bombarded with ads from the big department stores so did not know what was out there. However, manufacturers seem to have created all these expensive items these days and with kids being bombarded with ads on TV and their mates having the/an item, they seem to think parents are an endless ATM and demand they get that or a bigger/better item.

It is far too commercialised these days, and with all due respect I think some of the parents are also to blame by giving into the demands and not being firm enough with the children. The other side of commercialisation is the money some people spend on lights and decorations these days - what is wrong with the old tinsel and row ocoloured lights?

As far as gatherings for lunch/dinner are concerned, it often turns out to be just another excuse to get drunk. I have not done a Christmas lunch/dinner at home since 2005, (also the last time I bothered with putting up the Christmas tree) and if we are not interstate at relatives, it has just been lunch at the local hotel (even though their prices are jacked up for the day relative to what you get), so apart from the fact that we get a few days off work, it would not bother me if Christmas celebrations were not held.

I am not a grinch but it is just such an expensive time of the year for the outcome.
