Its been all over the news lately & ads are playing on TV regarding the brutal treatment of our livestock overseas. Not only do they have to suffer the long journey by ship, they then have to suffer the cruelty of being inhumanely handled, tied with wire, stuffed into car boots & then watch trembling in terror as they wait their turn to have their throats cut & all this in the name of religious practices ie;Halal, Kosher etc. Thankgod for the RSPCA & Animals Australia exposing the brutal operations in the abbatoirs of asia & the middle east and it is blatantly obvious that we cannot guarantee the welfare of livestock once they leave our shores. Lets put an end to this inhumane trade & put an end to the cruelty forever. I believe a total ban on live exports is warranted & if you want to support this go to www.rspca.org.au or www.hsi.org.au/?catID=943 and voice your opposition by signing a petition against the live trade. What do others think?

I couldn't agree more. The majority of the public are undoubtedly with us on this one too but neither political party has the guts to stand up to the farm lobby who put profit above ethics and compassion. I have helped Animals Australia to gather signatures for a petition to end this inherently cruel trade and since the 4 Corners program we have had people continually queueing up to sign for the whole time the stall is open. Why oh why do politicians lose their ethics and compassion once they are elected? All the economic arguments used against stopping this trade are the same as those used when machines first replaced workers at the start of the industrial revolution and again when Australia ended whaling about 35 years ago. But in each case those who were displaced eventually found work in other (often related) fields and life went on. So it would be this time. If only there were enough politicians with the guts to put the animals' interests before those of their party.
